- Broken but Beautiful
In these verses, Jesus compares His generation to fickle children in the marketplace.
- The Scenario: One group of children wants to play a "wedding" game (piping/flutes), but the other group refuses to dance. The first group then tries a "funeral" game (wailing/mourning), but the second group refuses to be sad.
- The Meaning: Jesus points out the absurdity of religious leaders who criticized both John the Baptist and Himself. John lived an austere, solitary life, and they claimed he had a demon. Jesus ate, drank, and associated with sinners, and they called Him a "glutton and a drunkard.
- The Lesson: No matter the approach, the stubborn critics were never going to be pleased because their hearts were closed to the truth.
